SIGNUM saved USD 21 mln for a major oil and gas company in a high-profile environmental dispute case

SIGNUM lawyers won a court case action in the Court of First Instance, Court of Appeal and Court of Cassation lodged by the Regional Environment Protection department claiming environmental damage recovery caused by illegal production of common mineral deposits.

The Court of Cassation ruled to reject USD 21 mln (KZT 3.9 bln) claim of the Environment Protection department. Decision of the Court of Appeal is final and comes into force immediately.

Talgat Sariev, Partner quotes: “We are inspired by the case outcome. Obviously an intense and coordinated joint work of our lawyers and Client’s representatives resulted in this outcome. This certainly proves that interests of the client – major investor – may be protected at the adequate level in local courts, provided that a proper and professional approach is applied and regardless of status of opposing party at the court and claimed amount. The raised issues at the court are practically relevant and we plan to apply the gained experience to similar cases”.
